Mailing cities are assigned by the U.S. Postal Service for delivery efficiency. Municipal limits are set by state law and local annexation. The two systems overlap in Union County, but they don't match.
Matthews addresses in Union County
The Town of Matthews sits in Mecklenburg County. Many homes with a Matthews mailing address are in Union County, and some are in or near the Village of Wesley Chapel. Their property taxes, schools, and planning authority follow the parcel, not the post office.
Waxhaw and Monroe addresses
The same applies to Waxhaw and Monroe addresses. A Waxhaw mailing address does not automatically place a property inside the Town of Waxhaw.
How to verify
Look up the parcel in Union County GIS, check the municipality and county fields, and confirm with the relevant town. Then confirm school assignment through Union County Public Schools for the exact address.
